A Second Higher Education degree involves obtaining a new qualification in a different field based on an existing higher education degree. These programs typically last 2–3 years, and you receive a state-standard diploma.
In contrast, Additional Professional Education (APE) is designed for those who already hold a secondary vocational or higher education degree and wish to upgrade their qualifications (update their knowledge) or undergo professional retraining (acquire a new profession). APE programs are shorter, practice-oriented, and conclude with the issuance of a diploma or a standard certificate of completion.
